Atlantic Nor'easter is moving on. The snow was just about gone from the Appalachian cams. The Maine cams all seem down this morning. More than 130,000 are waking up with out power, some under two feet of snow. There is a little snow left falling along the coast that should move out by lunch today. Parts of northern New York thru north New England may see more snow on Friday as another front comes through.

Lava on the Loose in Hawaii

Lava from Kilauea volcano is creeping into the small town of Pahoa on Hawaii's big island. The volcano has been erupting since 1983 but in June new fissures opened up sending lava in a new direction. The lava has staled on the flow front today but is worse at the source. Dirt escape routes have been made for some that would otherwise be cut off. Houses are expected to be lost in this. Tourism and the local economy has picked up with visitors coming to see the lava come thru town.

This is the area around the front of the lava flow coming into Pahoa. The red is the movement in the last day. Note the location of the transfer station.

Credit:USGS..more detailed information and maps can be found there.

Video footage taken 11.1.14 by USGS showing the June 27 Kilauea lava flow advancing toward the Pahoa transfer station. As of 11.1.14, a lava breakout was roughly 25 yards from the fence line of the transfer station.

Hanna has formed & should push southwest into Central America with tropical storm force winds.. Nicaragua should take the brunt of Hanna. Unfortunately 24 have died from flooding there in the last week. The hardest hit area was near the border of Honduras & Nicaragua where Hanna is expected to impact.

There is a Tropical Wave approaching the Windward Islands of the Caribbean. This could be declared an invest, . Geos-5 is torn between re-curving this system out to sea as a weak storm & keeping it as a struggling wave that rains it's way to Florida eventually.

There is a new study out that includes an animation of reconstruction data for precipitation since 1900. It's in a really, really large quicktime movie format..
Shen, S.S.P., N. Tafolla, T.M. Smith, and P.A. Arkin, 2014: Multivariate regression reconstruction and its sampling error for the quasi-global annual precipitation from 1900-2011, Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences , 71, 3250-3268. doi: 10.1175/JAS-D-13-0301.1
Abstract & such are here.

Ex-Gonzalo broke free of the front, reformed and is now over Greece.. it's expected to make it to Western Turkey, with severe winds, hail & possibly snow.

94L born of 09L remains, it is off Central AmericaThe models are everywhere but the Gulf of Mexico with this. With all the land, trough, being part of a wave this doesn't seem as likely to develop.

A second low came out of 09L and that trough, it is near South Florida, still embedded in the trough. GEOS-5 hasn't given up on this low. South Florida may have some crazy weather today & tonight.

08L EX-GONZALO Hit Scotland with winds up to 88mph in Oban. Two deaths in the United Kingdom are being blamed on ex-Gonzalo. One was a woman hit by a falling tree in London. The other was a man killed by a car he was working on when it got blown off the Jacks. Four others were injured. There has been some power outages & flight cancellations, flooding, the ferry closed.

Gonzalo has gotten wrapped up with a powerful cold blast of air that should turn a warm fall to winter as it passes over Germany, France & the Alps. Switzerland is expecting blizzard conditions, while Northern Holland anticipates high winds.

Video 1, Ex-Ganzalo on the shores of Norderney

Video 2. Ex-Gonzalo snowing it out..

92L still has 40mph winds. It's sort of lacking in convection at this time. The models have 92L meander in ever direction, including possibly to The Azores as a Tropical Storm. 92L has caused five deaths so far.

09L born of Trudy's remains, it has killed six & caused 40,000 to be evacuated near Acapulco, and has now been downgraded to a Post Tropical Low.

12Z GEOS-5 run had the trough split and a strong Tropical Storm for The Keys and South Florida. Look at the models with a little grain of salt. They aren't being fed their satellite images. I miss NOAA satellite services.. Hard times for The Sat Club. Did read that the models have so much redundancy that for the next few days if we didn't get sat data in them it shouldn't degrade the models much. If the outage continues it would get worse. Looks like GEOS-5 is getting it's normal input, being a NASA product.

It has been pretty persistent about a Tropical Storm for The Keys & South Florida on Friday. Turns that wave around 40W into a hurricane next week too.

08L EX-GONZALO with winds of up to 75mph in exposed areas hit the United Kingdom today. The worst is expected on Tuesday during rush hour traffic in many areas.

92L has 45 mph winds but is about as warm core as it is going to get according to the GFS.. This storm has already wrecked some devastation and is expected to meander toward the Azores..

The Canary Islands Government declared a state of alert in Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. Tenerife, and especially it's capital, the most affected area.

92L has caused up to 5 causalties, one being in theoccurred in the Avenida de Venezuela Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where the water dragged a 56-year-old was crossing the street with her husband. The woman ended up under a parked car and suffered a cardiac arrest from which he never recovered. Previously, two people suffered minor injuries in a fire caused by a lightning strike on a boat moored in the fishing harbor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In another intervention, firefighters rescued three people who had been isolated in a cave in Barranco de Santos.

More extreme flooding footage from 92L.

93L, born of Trudy's remains, has killed six & caused 40,000 to be evacuated near Acapulco. Several models want to make this into a lot of rain over South Florida later this week or hit it with a hurricane.

08L GONZALO has winds of 110kt. It is expected to peak today at 115kts. Bermuda should be preparing to get hit for the second time in a week. Most likely Gonzalo will visit Bermuda midday Friday with 100kt winds. It's stressful getting hit twice like this except prepping the second time is easier since it's partly done already & much of the loose weak stuff has already come down.

Gonzalo strengthened to a Category 2 storm while passing through the Caribbean causing structural damage to homes and 12 injuries in Antigua and the disappearance of five people in Martinique. All of these were riding the storm out on boats at the time of disappearance. The search teams are out. Some of the islands are without power. Many of our wunderbloggers from the area seemed to go offline as the eye was approaching.

Excellent time lapse of Gonzalo, great song too Are those pigs out playing in the hurricane?

Watch the eye of the storm pass across the Horizon from off screen right to off screen left. Clip starts just as Gonzalo is upgraded from a tropical storm to a Hurricane. Off camera to the right is St. Eustatius, centre horizon St. Barts & off screen to the left St. Maarten. Pay special attention to the rotation of the clouds as this indicates the north westerly movement of the eye. Filmed on location from Lower Hell's Gate on the Island of Saba in the Dutch Caribbean. Equipment: GoPro Hero3 Black+ Time lapse created by: Malachy Magee Music: "Hello Hurricane" from the album of the same title by Switchfoot.

The November Garden

By: Skyepony, 4:40 AM GMT on October 15, 2014

The November Garden

Old Barn by montanajim

When to plant what & how in Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama.

In November the planting frenzy continues for all the state of Florida, heaviest for South FL planting some summer & most winter varieties still. Harvest should be picking up too with a mix of some early winter & late summer. It's a good month for local diverse veggie eating. It's time to turn compost into your garden, improve soil & throw seed to the ground. Don't forget to rotate your crops, for example..legumes (beans/peas), followed by heavy eaters like corn/tomatoes, then root crops & leafy greens. Surround with herbs & flowers when possible. Below is what each part of Florida should plant from seed this month.

North FL beets, Broccoli, cabbage, Carrots, kale, Kohlrabi, Mustard, onions, radish. Last month to plant~ spinach, strawberry & collards.

Central FL beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, collards, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, mustard, onions, english peas, radish. Last month to plant spinach, strawberry & turnips.

South FL all beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, collards, corn, cucumber, Kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, mustard, onions, all peas, potatoes, radish, spinach, tomato, turnips. Last month to plant strawberry.

November:
1st Clear fences and prepare for planting. Mow to increase growth, Castrate, Paint, Host a party.
2nd-3rd Good day to plant above ground and vine crops. Make changes.
4-5 Barren days
6-7 transplant
8-9 don't plant
10-12 plant both root vegetables & aboveground
13-17 Clear brush & kill plant pests.

Tropics Wreck Some Havoc

Like a thrown switch the tropics have become active some of which has run aground.

FAY did batter Bermuda a bit. Thousands lost electricity. Power poles were down, streets block, roofs damaged. Authorities are asking people to be safe in their post storm clean up.

Video 1~ Tropical Storm Fay in Bermuda today at 6.30am AST. Last 30 seconds of the clip is the worst - that was around 7am. Gusts were hurricane force (82 mph officially) and sustained at 60. Looking north across Hamilton Harbor towards the cargo docks. We lost part of the roof around this time, as did several of the neighbors. Listen carefully and you can hear water bubbling in through the windows.

Atlantic
Sub-Tropical 07L is now FAY. It's in the mid-Atlanic & should have a quick burst of development as it moves north & re-curves out to sea. Bermuda should keep an eye on this, models have shifted more in that general direction. Most also keep it no worse than a Tropical Storm but recon has found Category 1 winds in it this morning..

90L~ It's a blow up of convention embedded in the tail of Fay. The islands should watch this. I'm guessing it will be the last to form, if it forms at all. It may move over the islands & absorb some moisture from the Caribbean before eventually heading northeast & pulling together maybe a week from now.

There is also a blob off Africa ~ This is now 91L. Looks gamely but has a bit to go on ASCAT.

WPC rainfall forecast, 24hr & 5 days total.

East Pacific
91E has formed. This may bring alot of rain to the west side of Central America.

Moon Eclipse Rules King Tides Rise

By: Skyepony, 4:25 AM GMT on October 07, 2014

The King Tides are the seasonal high points for our astrological tides. It occurs when the sun, moon & earth align during a full or new moon (spring tide), while the moon is closest to the earth during it's 28 day elliptical orbit (perigee). This year's King Tides schedule is as follows.

2014 King Tides

January 1-3, 2014
August 8-12, 2014
September 6-12, 2014
October 6-11, 2014
November 5-8, 2014

Several areas from TX to the Northeast should see tides reach 6 inches or more above Astrological high tide. TX tide is getting a small surge boost from that blob in the Gulf as well. Overall most gauges look to peak both tonight & the 9th or in between. For Miami the worst is expected the 8th & 9th.. The city tried to prepare. This coupled with sea level rise has become a damaging, costly, seasonal event. The city spent $15 million on these pumps..

An energy disipator at 14th Street and West Avenue. The disipator is the last part of the water removal process that places water from street level into the bay, having gone through the pumping station which is underground. Monday, October 6, 2014.WALTER MICHOT/MIAMI HERALD STAFF

This tide event will be the first real test for these pumps. It's hoped they will be handy enough to shorten flood times & perhaps minimize it some. They are only the beginning of a $500million project that includes 58 pumps along the beach that should be completed over the next five years. Looking at this video from Miami's high tide today, they will need them. In the article it is noted that the pumps are just the beginning. There are plans for sea walls, new buildings with higher elevations and to raise existing roads above the rising tides..

September Moon Names:
Harvest Moon, Haligmonath (Holy Month), Moon When Deer Paw the Earth, Singing Moon, Sturgeon Moon, Witumanoth (Wood Month), Wine Moon.

When other months were added to the oldest version of the Roman seasonal calender, for some reason the name of the month September was unchanged like some others. The Autumn Equinox was and is still celebrated by many cultures and people around the world. This is the last month to harvest for much of the Northern Hemisphere. As this end of the earth passes through it's dying season the Dark Moon deities, who represent the Underworld, death, reincarnation, and deep spiritual mysteries, now hold sway. Halloween is on it's way..

Correspondences

Nature Spirits: trooping faeries
Herbs: copal, fennel, rye, wheat, valerian, skullcap

ECFL Sept Rain & Swamp Ponies

By: Skyepony, 2:57 PM GMT on October 04, 2014

A hot topic this past month was exactly how wet East Central Florida was.. After a few dry summers & a fairly dry August this year, suddenly things changed. We got troughed on hard as an inverted trough set up aloft. Volusia County did indeed get hit the hardest. They had their wettest September since records began. On the 7th they received 3.54 inches of rain breaking the daily record. On the 23rd & 24th they were hit with 6-8 inches again causing flooding issues. Other areas including Sanford, Lake County were hit hard & around parts of the St Johns River flooded as it rose. Port Orange had 1.5 million dollars in estimated damages. Flooding of streets & low areas have been fairly common across the whole area, much of the month. Septic tanks are slow, disease carrying mosquitoes abundant & retention ponds are full.

Most areas of East Central Florida received 150-200 % of normal with departures between 3 To 5 inches in many places. Daytona had their wettest September on record with 18.15 incehes (11.19
inches above normal). It smashes the previous record from 2004 of 16.46 inches. It was also the 4th wettest month on record for Daytona Beach.

Daily rain records broke.

DAYTONA BEACH:
-SEPTEMBER 7TH: RECORD RAINFALL OF 3.54 INCHES. PREVIOUS RECORD WAS
2.65 INCHES SET IN 1957.
-SEPTEMBER 24TH: RECORD RAINFALL OF 6.41 INCHES. PREVIOUS RECORD WAS
4.22 INCHES SET IN 1974.

VERO BEACH:
-SEPTEMBER 21ST: RECORD RAINFALL OF 1.43 INCHES. PREVIOUS RECORD WAS
1.24 INCHES SET BACK IN 1969.
-SEPTEMBER 25TH: RECORD RAINFALL OF 1.66 INCHES. PREVIOUS RECORD WAS
1.45 SET BACK IN 1960.

SEPTEMBER 2014 RAINFALL TOTALS FOR THE FOUR PRIMARY CLIMATE SITES
ACROSS EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA ARE AS FOLLOWS (RANKINGS PROVIDED IF IN
THE TOP 10):

-DAYTONA BEACH RECEIVED 18.15 INCHES OF RAIN FOR THE MONTH, WHICH

INCHES ABOVE NORMAL.

-MELBOURNE RECEIVED 12.53 INCHES OF RAIN FOR THE MONTH, WHICH WAS
4.89 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKS AS THE 9TH WETTEST SEPTEMBER ON
RECORD FOR THIS SITE.
