Local flooding occurred yesterday in front of Melbourne High School on Babcock Rd in Melbourne as a line of heavy rain made it's way thru in the afternoon. NWS in Mebourne isn't far from this location. It had 2.36 inches of rain and broke it's all time precipitation record for the date. The old record was set in 1993. The worst of these storms did pass a little south of there. This area most likely had more. Melbourne High is also near to Melbourne International Airport which recorded a wind of 48mph, on the airfield as these storms passed.

Vehicles water damaged at the1300 block of south Babcock Street, across from Melbourne high school. The heavy rains on Thursday flooded an area of parking lot near Old School Pizza, which is in front of Percepta, which had some employees, along with MHS students, and others found with several inches of water in their vehicles. Towing services arrived, and in many cases, co-workers and fellow students pushed the vehicles out of the flooded area. credit:TIM SHORTT/FLORIDA TODAY

Shade Balls

Los Angeles has released Shade Balls onto their water reservoirs. These 96 million, 4 inch in diameter, black, hollow, polyethylene balls floating atop the water should guard it from around 300 million gallons of evaporation a year. Blocking sunlight has the added benefit of preventing algae growth and solar induced chemical reactions from taking place in the water. In LA there is Bromide naturally occurring in the ground water. The city uses Chlorine to treat the water but in the presence of sunshine the two combine to become bromate, a suspected carcinogen. The balls also deter water fowl from fouling the water. Shade Balls used in this water conservation project were made locally for 33-36 cents a piece by the company XavierC LLC. The overall order for the area exceeded what one manufacturer could produce, Artisan Screen Printing of Azusa, Calif., and Orange Products Inc., of Allentown, Pa also contributed.

Shade Balls are also known as conservation balls. They are made with a small amount of clean water already in them and can withstand winds of 100mph. These were coated with a chemical to help them resist solar decay and last over 25 years. They automatically stack on each other as reservoir levels fall & return to a single layer as they rise again. More recently they have been used at ski resorts for water conservation but have a history of use around airports to deter water fowl, ammonia tanks to reduce vapors and at petroleum facilities to conserve water and deter birds.

It was expected to take 150 trucks to cover 90% of the surface of this reservoir with shade balls.

Mesmerising moment shade balls are released into water supply

Circus Tent Collapse & MTSAT Outage

By: Skyepony, 8:18 PM GMT on August 09, 2015

In today's world with the added heat, water vapor and extreme weather, the number of event and campground weather related injuries and deaths due to weather are on the rise. It's becoming more and more apparent that one should, when in these outdoor venues, keep tabs on the weather with your phone and make your own personal decision to shelter or not. Many times, as this extreme weather rears it's ugly head, some event offical or campground owner, fails to recognize impending doom. Concert stage collapse, like this one from last year or when 20 died in Arkansas camping in a flood has become too common.

It's happened again but during a circus performance. This is the same circus that winters here in Florida & comes to my town to set up most years. They were up in New Hampshire earlier this week and got hit by a storm. They were set up in Lancaster, NH which is just about west of Berlin near the border of VT. The WUnderNexrad radar of the incident is here. NWS issued a warning on the storm at 5:30pm for 55 to 60mph winds with gusts to 75mph. The show was just getting underway at the circus. People were told to stay in the tent which may have been rated for 70mph winds. At the last minute people were told to shelter in their vehicles. The tent collapsed at about 5:45pm. A father with his 6 year old daughter were killed and about 50 people were injured. It was noted in the aftermath that a half mile to a mile path of downed trees led up to the collapsed circus tent. The winds can be heard easily in this terrifying video from inside the tent.

Atlantic Ocean

It is storming across IL down into KY tonight. That may gather over Western North Carolina and move in to the Atlantic. NASA's GEOS-5 has that pull together somewhat as a 1008mb Low, offshore, over the weekend. CMC phase diagram has it barely tropical at one point. The worst side of the storm should be offshore.

Little early to say where 93E is going. Late track models head it back toward land, early track models head out to sea. Hawaii, who has GUILLERMO just to it's north can look out for Hilda next. 15W is a ways behind Soudelor, a Super Typhoon most likely headed toward Taiwan, that maybe raging 100kts at landfall. It's currently somewhat lopsided which can make forecasting the movement tougher as it may wobble more. The depression in the Southern Hemisphere continues to weaken.
