~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RIP Pumpkin 1/23/2016 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ January Garden Cool weather is suppose to show up in January and February in Florida this extreme El Nino year, so don't pull up your winter gardens yet. It is a good year to plant a few things out of season, especially Central and South Florida and in protected or easily protected areas...lean a little warm. Crops should be rotates as successive plantings go in through out the season to starve out pests. * means last month to plant.
North FL is planting more this month, nearly the full season range of veggies. Plant beets, Broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, Carrots, cauliflower, celery, kale, Kohlrabi, leek, Mustard, parsley, snow peas, potatoes, radish & turnips..........this year I'd add or keep eggplant, peppers, tomatoes & maybe start a cucumber or watermelon in an area easy to protect.
Central FL The 1st tastes of summer get planted this month & just about all the cool season veggies..plant eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, watermelon, beets, broccoli*, cabbage*, carrots, cauliflower*, celery, collards, kale*, kohlrabi, leek, lettuce, mustard, parsley, snow peas, potatoes, radish & turnips.....this year I'd skip everything with a *.
South FL Plant everything except cantaloupe, okra, sweet potatoes & strawberries. That's a normal year...this year I'd be planting everything in South Florida except lettuce and the winter veggies that can't tolerate 80ºF weather.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ With the end of the year nigh it is time to reflect upon this past weather year in memes and such. As an El Niño had threatened a while began to blossom in full, the weather got interesting, as did the memes. Thanks to everyone that took the time and piece of mind to created and share these most often memorable moments from our struggle thru a day or storm.
The year started with heavy snows in the Eastern United States, fights over storm names and if severe weather was actually occurring..
Weather was nice in Florida for Groundhogs Day.
In the Spring the El Niño weather started getting serious..
The early invests gave a hint of the wet year to come. 95L
Tropical Depression Bill brought a new and absolutely frightening reason to stay out of the extreme flooding that occurred over and over this year...sharks.
A shark was also spotted near Melbourne High School after some flooding..
Watched it flood for weeks on an Oklahoma Wundercam long enough to get to know some local birds. The sharks haven't seemed to have made it that far inland.
Was an epic year for not just flooding from rain but tidal flooding as well..
The Pacific had a record breaking year.. A Microwave of Dolphin
The Atlantic did not so much...
Season was fairly weak. Plenty of chairs down in Southwest Florida like after this storm in June.
Overall it was a year if it was just coming down cats you were okay..
That made that tough old saying about insurance really ring true..
So far winter has been sort of slow..

SpaceX Launch History from my front yard.. It went up thru clouds. Was blocked by a flying light shower from the SE for a few minutes. Cloud cleared, Falcon went near straight up & gradually got smaller. Saw the first stage do a burn on the way back down. Wasn't that loud of a launch with a short sound. Space flight history was made 10 minutes later when the first stage of the rocket landed across the river at Cape Canaveral Air force Station.

Historic Atlas 5 Launch The first Atlas 5 supporting the International Space Station launched today. It was lifting a commercial Cygnus freighter filled with supplies for the astronauts. It has been the first time since last Spring that the United States was able to send supplies. Both the rockets contracted to launch supplies are in review due to failure. Orbital ATK bought a lift on an Atlas 5 from United Space Alliance for it's container ship.
This was the 60th successful launch for Atlas 5. The three days of weather delays ended a 26 launch streak of launching on the first attempt.

When to plant what & how in Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama. It's been a hot fall. Leafy veggies are faring better in part shade. Lettuce may fare better in an air conditioned house. Some of the summer plants like sweet potato and black eyed peas are still producing. It's worth trying to start some winter greens now so if the the cool air comes in January like GEOS forecast than atleast they'll be started and ready to take advantage.
Central FL beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, collards, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, mustard, onions, parsley, english peas, radish.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Good hay may be a little hard to find this winter for the southeast. Hay is typically grown in the spring, summer and fall. There tends to be three cuttings or times that the hay is harvested. Second cutting this year was when FL got really drenched by the trough and then Georgia and South Carolina was drowned by storm remains. Stock up!
