Weather Ahead

Sunday Florida gets a cool light rain as the Appalachians get a good chance at some snow. By Tuesday things shift with snow setting up over the Northwest until at least the weekend. Idaho and surrounding area should be hit again with heavy snow. The heavy snow there has made it difficult so far this winter on wildlife in that region. At least 80 pronghorn antelope have died due to conditions this month. Some spooked on the slick frozen Snake River, others got hungry and grazed on poisonous yew off the lawns in the town of Payette. State wildlife official are feeding wild big game in Idaho, Oregon and Western Wyoming. The predators are fairing extra well. Their large padded paws travel well on top of the snow and ice. Horses have also suffered. Two got caught in deep snow on a mountain in Idaho. One was rescued by helicopter the other is presumed dead.

Another low and round of precipitation is coming for California. It's expected to arrive around Thursday. NASA estimated the last two storms to hit deposited ~17.5-million acre feet of water on California's Sierra Nevada Range in January 2017. The snow totals there are 120 percent of normal for the month. In terms of the total deficit from the recent 5 year drought, these storms alleviated that by 37 percent. Precipitation falling so quickly has the reservoirs relatively full, upping the flood risk. Looking at NASA's GEOS-5 model February is in for average to slightly above for most of the west coast. March looks much more above average, nearly as much above as January had been expected.

Drought in the Southeast may intensify again over the next two months.

February and March look slight above average in temperature across the USA, except in the Northwest which is cooler and any where near the Great Lakes which maybe much warmer than normal.

Tropically next month, I'll give a better chance for more storms along the northern edge of Australia and around the Philippines than other areas, though Southern Indian Ocean will probably see a few. Overall the Southern Hemisphere Tropical Season seems to be struggling to produce much while the storm energy has been raining out in the more northern and southern latitudes in areas where it's not so much the current typhoon season.

As for Sea Ice (& not that it isn't alarming right now) we may see even a larger crash or deviation in the Arctic in April. May see some Antarctic sea ice recovery at the cost of ice on Antarctica later this year.

Even though models have trended warmer toward an El Nino event ESPI has fallen to -1.21. La Nina conditions have dug in for the next 6 weeks or so atleast. Overall La Nina is looking like it's maturing, the Tropical Instability waves are breaking down, from below the surface it's warming. Looks only a matter of time. But still not so confident about seeing beyond the spring barrier this year as to when.

Arizona Has a New Crack

A huge fissure or crack in the earth has recently opened up in Pinal County in the state of Arizona. The crack was first spotted on Google Earth by Joseph Cook, a geologist with Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS) and is almost 2 miles long. The northern end is older and partially filled in. Some areas the fissure is 10 feet wide and 25-30ft deep others are more liken to small surface cracks. It's not uncommon for there to be larger caverns of unknown size under the cracks that could cave in at any time. According to Cook, water withdrawal mostly for agriculture is the cause. As groundwater is drawn up it leaves a cavern that can cause the land above it to subside, leaving cracks and cave ins. He expects this crack to grow larger. The AZGS is currently mapping a total of 170 miles of fissures across Arizona. This one is in the middle of no where. Though the crack was deemed worrisome, it's biggest immediate threat is burying a fissure explorer.
