Watches & Warnings

Fire Weather Watch
Issued: 1:47 PM PDT Oct. 17, 2019 – National Weather Service

... Fire Weather Watch in effect from Saturday morning through
Saturday evening for gusty winds and low humidity for portions of
the Sierra front and west-central Nevada...

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Fire Weather
Watch for gusty winds and low humidity, which is in effect from
Saturday morning through Saturday evening.

* Affected area... portions of fire zone 450 western Nevada Sierra
front, fire zone 453 west central Nevada basin and range and
fire zone 459 Mineral and southern Lyon counties.

* Winds... fast moving cold front is expected to produce northwest
winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph.

* Humidity... relative humidities are expected to be marginal with
this event, possibly only dropping into the 15-25% range.

* Duration... the overlap of low relative humidity and strong gusty
winds may only last 3-4 hours depending on how quickly moisture
moves into the region. However, strong gusty winds will likely
persist for at least 6-8 hours.

* Confidence... forecast confidence is only 50% that low relative
humidities (less than 20%), will overlap with strong gusty winds
for 3 hours or more. However, with the stronger nature of the
winds, and with dry fine fuels (i.E. Grass), fire could spread
rapidly. If our confidence does not increase, the watch may
remain in place instead of upgrading to a warning.

* Impacts... the combination of gusty winds and low humidity can
cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first
responders can contain them.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry
vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires.
Follow local fire restrictions. Check weather.Gov/Reno for
